“While I cherish my role as a President and CEO of the Canadian Lung Association; a role that's even more important to me is my role as a father of four grown children . This is a role that is both rewarding and challenging. While I am thankful that my concerns about playground scrapes and high school sports injuries are behind me, there are other dangers that lurk about, predictable and unpredictable.
There are even invisible dangers that can attack our health , and specifically our lung health. Radon is one of these dangers. Like many, I thought that as long as we stress the importance of staying tobacco-free to our children, at least their lungs would be safe from harm. The reality could not be farther from the truth. Radon is an odourless, tasteless and colourless gas that can hide in our houses. This gas can cause lung cancer and in fact is the second leading cause of lung cancer.
I feel passionately about encouraging everyone to test their homes for radon. Parenting is a job that never sees retirement. My children will soon enter a home-buying stage in their lives and my house-warming present to each of them will be a radon test kit. It will be the gift of safety, security, health and reassurance.
With so many unpredictable dangers and diseases that can befall your loved ones; it's incumbent upon us to act on the ones that are preventable. Radon gas is one of these. You can have the peace of mind your loved ones are safe and healthy by testing your home for radon.”
