“I became involved with The Lung Association as the professional football player Manitoba ambassador for the Tackle Radon campaign. Tackle Radon is a campaign that challenges Saskatchewan and Manitoba to ‘tackle radon’ by testing their home for radon. Andrew Greene represents Saskatchewan residents and I represent Manitoba residents. When it comes to lung cancer prevention, it doesn't matter if you wear blue or green, when it comes to lung cancer prevention we are all on the same team. We have encouraged over a 2000 people to test for radon over the last two years and I challenge you to get in the game and test your home for radon .
Once I became involved with The Lung Association as a Tackle Radon ambassador I knew ‘Protect Your Family, Test for Radon’ was a mission worth sharing. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer and many parts of the country are hot spots, including where I live in Manitoba.
As a professional football player, keeping healthy is vital. I am also a husband, and father of three young children. When I tested our home for radon and found the levels were higher than I wanted it was a wakeup call for myself and my family . You can't, see, taste or smell radon. The only way to know how much is in your home is to test for it.
I worked with a certified radon mitigation expert to bring the radon levels down in my home, to lower my family's risk of developing lung cancer. I know there are so many other families just like mine who have high levels of radon in their home and don't even know it. We are currently building a new home. We will be testing our new home for radon as well to ensure radon levels are safe. If we have to mitigate the new home, I won't hesitate for even a split second to do so.
There should be no reason people are suffering or dying from radon related lung cancer. I don't want to see friends, family, loved ones, or communities being affected by radon when this dangerous gas can be removed and dealt with in our homes. Let's all get in the game and tackle radon together. ”
